Imaging integration

DICOM, DICOMweb and PACS/RIS connection

Studies from X-ray, CT, ultrasound and other imaging devices are matched to their order and enter the patient's timeline and the reporting queue. Matching does not rely on a name alone; the DICOM header, the order and the identity are verified together.

Image data is handled in one of two ways

The choice follows your organization's existing setup. In both, the HekimBis viewer is for clinical and reference viewing; for primary reading, authorized and recorded hand-off opens your organization's approved viewer.

Connection to an existing PACS/RIS
HekimBis manages the order, the status, the study record, the report and the authorized hand-off to the viewer. Image data is not duplicated unnecessarily, and the status and report on both sides are reconciled. This is how it integrates with hospital-scale RIS and PACS systems.
HekimBis managed archive and viewer
For outpatient facilities and small to mid-size diagnostic centers, image data is kept in an encrypted archive separate from the clinical record. Organization and branch isolation, retention rules, integrity checks, previews, study and series comparison, tracking of measurements and annotations by source image and user, and audit of sharing and export are part of this mode.

From order to report, from acquisition to timeline

From the moment an imaging order is opened until the report is written to the patient's timeline, every step is recorded with its status and time.

All steps

  1. 01 Order (Clinic) An imaging order is opened with indication, site, modality, and priority.
  2. 02 Worklist (Modality) The order appears on the modality worklist; acquisition is done.
  3. 03 Transfer and verification (Archive) The study is ingested and technically verified.
  4. 04 Patient-to-order match (Archive) Header data is compared with the order.
  5. 05 Reading and report (Reporting) From the reading queue to a draft, then a signed final report.
  6. 06 Timeline (Patient timeline) The report and key image appear on the patient timeline; portal release depends on physician approval.

Alternative path from 04 Patient-to-order match; it returns to the main flow at 05 Reading and report.

  1. 04a No match (Archive) The header does not match the order.
  2. 04b Quarantine (Archive) The study goes to human review and enters the reading queue once verified.

Alternative path from 03 Transfer and verification; it returns to the main flow at 03 Transfer and verification.

  1. 03a Repeat acquisition (Modality) A new acquisition is made for the stated rejection reason and a new study is ingested.

Patient details are not retyped at the device

An imaging order is opened with the clinical reason, body site, modality and priority, and the contrast and allergy check is done with it. The technologist selects the patient from the device's worklist, so patient details are not entered again by hand.

The device reports whether the acquisition is scheduled, started, completed, canceled or failed, and on devices that support it, progress and storage commitment are tracked as well. When a study reaches the archive, the patient details in the DICOM header are compared with the order. A study that does not match is quarantined and does not enter the reading queue until a person has checked it.

Duplicate images, missing series, late-arriving studies and acquisitions made on the wrong patient are handled through reconciliation steps.

Services the connection covers

Standard DICOM is used on the device side and DICOMweb on the web side.

  • Connection test and study intake

The link between device and archive is tested with C-ECHO, and intake at study, series and image level is done with C-STORE.

  • Query and retrieve

When needed, studies are queried and retrieved with C-FIND and C-MOVE.

  • DICOMweb

QIDO-RS, WADO-RS and STOW-RS services give web access to studies.

  • Conformance checks

Compatibility is tested for SOP class, transfer syntax, character set and manufacturer-specific tags.

  • Reporting

Draft, signature, final report, addendum, correction and withdrawal with templates specific to specialty and modality, plus comparison with earlier studies and reports.

  • Critical findings

A critical finding notification goes to the target person and waits for acknowledgment. The report and key image appear together on the patient timeline.

What evidence puts a device on the supported list?

Imaging and PACSDevice connectivity

Only combinations verified at the level of manufacturer, exact model, protocol and software version are listed as integrated. For each combination, a conformance or interface document, identity and order matching, supported data fields, error and outage scenario results, and the test date and evidence are on record.

An acceptance scenario is run with a test device or the vendor's test environment, and verification is renewed when the version changes.

DICOM media from a device that is not on the list is imported manually, labeled as not integrated, and stored with its source.

Frequently asked questions about the imaging connection

FAQ
What are DICOM and PACS?

DICOM is the international standard for moving medical images and related information between devices. PACS is the archive and viewing system where those images are stored and displayed.

What is the HekimBis viewer used for?

For opening, comparing, measuring and annotating studies in clinical and reference viewing. Primary diagnostic reading is done in the organization's approved viewer, and the reporting flow records that.

Can an image be attached to the wrong patient?

The header information, the order and the identifiers are checked together. A study that does not match is quarantined and goes to human review.

My device has DICOM output but is not on the list.

Share the device details. Until testing is complete, the study can be taken in as a file; it is labeled as not integrated and keeps its source.

Does it work with a hospital-scale system?

Yes. It integrates with hospital-scale RIS and PACS. HekimBis runs the order, result and report flow in outpatient facilities and small to mid-size diagnostic centers.
